Ten Essential Apps for DIY Enthusiasts

Home improvement appsJust like our wardrobes need constant replenishing, our homes need to ‘get with it’ from time to time as well. The scope of home improvements can vary from a simple lick of paint on the walls, to adding a garage or even a whole new floor. But, regardless of how ambitious the project may or may not be, there’s going to be a lot of tough choices to be made. The good news for homeowners is, mobile technology is keeping pace.

What follows are ten great mobile apps for home remodeling. They’re not going to solve any arguments which color paint to use for the living room, but they will help in planning these kinds of projects more efficiently. Take a look into these niche apps that may make your remodeling excursion a bit more pain free.

Photo Measures –For convenience sake, no DIY enthusiast can be without this handy little app. Let’s face it, taking measurements is one of the duller aspects of home DIY. Rather than scrabbling around for a notepad to jot things down on, you can use Photo Measures to snap a photo of the room or object in question, then literally draw the measurements you need to remember right on top of those images.

Home Design  3D – We’ve all seen those funky websites using augmented reality technology to display homes in various different styles of décor. Wouldn’t it be great if you could do that for your own home, using just an iPhone? Well, you can. Home Design 3D is able to map your vision in both 2D and 3D, generating each room in your home complete with all of its furniture, windows, doors etc.

Home Space Planning Design Tool – Rather than wasting hours shoving furniture around, trying to maximize the amount of available space in each room, simply sit down and map things out on the small screen first. The Home Space Planning Design Tool allows you to create a blueprint of your room with accurate dimensions, then add all of your carefully-measured furniture on top. All you have to do now is sit down and shunt things around on your screen, until you hit on a suitable layout.

The Home Depot – Exactly what it claims to be – the official app of The Home Depot is a must have for anyone planning a visit to their home superstore. The app lists over 100,000 products on sale, complete with pricing information and availability in your local store. It also features a handy shopping list that will save you heaps of time dashing about the store when you arrive – just hand over your list and have the attendant gather up all you need. Sorted.

I.D. Wood – Few things are quite as classy as beautiful wooden panels or floorboards, but for those who are inexperienced in these matters, getting the perfect wood to set the mood can be pretty tough.

I.D. Wood makes life easier – essentially the app is like a visual dictionary, bursting with images of more than 160 different types of wood, with information on their best uses, sustainability and durability.

CraigsPro+ – One of the biggest considerations for home improvers is finding suitable items to accompany their new interior design style. One of the best places to look is Craigslist, and with this app you’ll be able to access all the latest postings direct from your iPhone, whether it’s building supplies, antiques, furniture, homes for sale, Upper West Side apartments in NYC for rent – anything you need.

Builder’s Formulator – This app is targeted at professional builders, but DIY enthusiasts who don’t mind getting ‘stuck-in’ will also find it quite handy. Essentially, it’s like a smart calculator for all kinds of home improvement projects, and can be used to estimate how much concrete to pour, how many meters of pipe is needed, voltage and wattage requirements, the ideal depth of excavations and many more. In addition, it can even calculate your monthly mortgage payments!

Feng Shui Bagua Map – This app won’t be for everyone, but for anyone looking to enhance their lives with a little ‘positive energy’, Feng Shui Bagua Map is an absolute must. The app is tailored to the westernized version of Feng Shui, meaning that Bagua Map aligns with the front door and not the compass, saving you from demolishing the house and starting all over again. Each of the nine sectors of Feng Shui are described in detail, and users can superimpose images of various rooms onto the Bagua Map to ensure everything is aligned perfectly.

Carpet & Floor Calculator – The Carpet & Floor Calculator is a very simple pricing tool, used to calculate the cost of carpeting or tiling the floor space in your home. Simply input the measurements it asks for, add the price per square foot and labor costs, then the expected length of time for the job to be done, and there’s your answer.

Houzz Interior Design Ideas (feature image top) – If you love nothing better than spending endless hours poring over glossy home decor magazines, then get ready to waste even more time with this app. Houzz Interior Design Ideas is a super little photo bank full of inspiration, offering more than 150,000 images of everything from kitchens and living rooms to patios and porches. It also includes sections with design ideas and tips from professionals, product suggestions and more.
