Websites and Resources for Geeky Dads

Father’s Day has passed, but this time of year is perfect for honoring the dads in our lives.  Especially the geeky dads, savvy enough to help their children navigate the web but still conscious of the dangers the little ones should avoid.  In honor of Father’s Day, we are going to look at some of the best websites for Geeky Dads, ones they can both shares and keep to themselves.

Blogs

There are a lot of blogs for Geeky Dads out there, here are the top three, why they’re funny, and why they’re worth checking out

GeekDad on Wired.com

Written by a group of several men, it offers insight into the inner workings of the geek dad.  For instance, Max Castera’s love of Lego’s is ever present when talks about a simple, and fun, way for a “father-to-kid life lesson,” on giving back through Bricks for Good.  GeekDad also has rechristened Fathers Day into National GeekDad Day, with a guide and all to help dads spend the day with their families doing cool projects and experiments handpicked by the knowledgable staff at Wired.com.  There are enough dads writing at GeekDad that it never feels stale, and no one author is dominant over another, each injecting their own version of geek, funny and real into the site.

Big Geek Daddy

When I say Big Geek Daddy hits on all topics, I’m not joking.  Animals, Flying, Funny, Military, Interesting, Music, and People are only a short list of all that is offered on this website.  With touching articles such as, “Beached Dolphins Rescued,” to funny observations in “Dancing Traffic Cop,” to techie articles like, “How the Internet Works,” and “Best Five Phones that are Pushing Forward Innovation,” leave something for every Geek Dad out there.

Products and entertainment

GeekyDadsSoftware

Kids are expensive–my daughter requires some sort of money output on a weekly basis, if not for dance, then for gymnastics, if not for gymnastics, then she needs it for the pool, or for one thing or another at school.  Software is also extremely expensive, one game might only cost $29.99, but six games at $30 each, and you’re almost at $200 just for computer entertainment.  GeekyDadsSoftware aims to solve the problem of expensive software for kids by putting into one place a list of applications and software that are free to download and enjoy.  Some of the offerings include PacMan, BubbleBreaker, Sodoku, and UltraStar Delux an open source karaoke game.

Fantasy Sports Leagues

Dad’s love their sports, geeks or not, but it takes a special geeky dad to fully appreciate all the nuances of fantasy sports leagues.  Some geeky dads play in just one, for instance the NFL’s Fantasy Football League, while others play in multiple leagues, with multiple teams and balance their benches and players with the ease of a teacher balancing 22 students alone, at lunchtime.  Fantasy leagues are not limited to football — the truly geeky dad can play fantasy leagues year round, with a seemingly never ending supply of leagues looking for players and men looking for leagues.

Think Geek

Think Geek is the website made specifically to purchase items that your beloved Geek will jump for joy over.  With specialized stores, such as Star Trek, Dr Who, and Mad Scientist there truly is something for everyone.  If this isn’t up your Geeks alley though, there are the more generic techies and zombies and bacon areas.

Geeks, Dads and Online Gaming

Dad’s love their online gaming, just because Junior is now here, doesn’t mean Call of Duty is forgotten! Alas, now there is more time to play because sleep no longer happens.  Geek dads nationwide are strapping infants to their chests, donning headsets, and drifting off to XBox Live Land.  The only difference?  Instead of having the Surround Sound Speakers up as loud as possible, now they are so low, the speakers themselves are unsure if they can be heard.

Geeky Dads are everywhere, they’re the ones who stayed in on Friday nights programming computers, and writing code while their roommates and friends went out and had fun drinking and with girls.  Sunday is Father’s Day, er… National Geek Day Day, honor your Geeky Dad by doing an experiment, playing some games, and perhaps organizing a draft for fantasy football, coming up in a few short months.
