Former EMC Employee Steals $220,000
EMC, which has been flying high since the wild success of their annual conference in Las Vegas experienced some misfortunes this week when a former employee was charged with theft totaling $220,000.
Madeline Vinton on Wednesday pleasd not guilty to five counts of larceny in Woburn Massachusetts and was held on $7,500 cash bail for her crimes. According to the Middlesex District Attorney, Gerard Leone Jr., it is alleged that Vinton stole more than $220,000 from EMC, which was spent on luxurious vacations, plastic surgery, limo rides, and tickets to the Boston Celtics basketball team.
Vinton was an administrative assistant at EMC from April 2006 until February of this year when she was fired, and while a spokesperson from EMC was not avialable to make an official statement the prosecutors said that, “it was early this year when the company’s own investigators red-flagged a ‘pattern of travel and expense activities that were inconsistent with Vinton’s role and assigned duties.’”
Vinton cashed in $48,000 in overtime she never worked and spent another $155,000 on personal expenses on an EMC issued credit card. This deceit was found following a probe by EMC and the Hopkinton Police Department which led to her arrest and the impending trial. Her pre-trial conference is scheduled for August 29 at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time EMC has fallen victim to such crimes. In December 2010 two men, Kevin Kelly and Mark Rothfuss, and Hanover MA based BL Trading LLC were federally charged with fraud and with selling, receiving, or transporting stolen property in interstate commerce. Kelly of North Carolina, was also charged with aggravated identity theft. The federal prosecutors in this case believed that more than $1 million in high-tech equipment was stolen from EMC facilities in both Massachusetts and North Carolina. Kelly was sentenced to 42 months and to pay $929,891 in restitution and the same amount in forfeiture. Rothfuss was sentenced to 36 months probation, with the first six months spent on house arrest, and $109,425 in restitution.
