Nikon Unveils its New Android-Powered Coolpix S800c

Android cameraHaving trouble finding a mobile phone with a decent enough camera for you? Well, how about you just ditch the phone altogether?

Nikon has come up with the answer to those yearning for better quality pics that they can instantly share through Facebook and Instagram and the like – the Android-powered Nikon Coolpix S800c, boasting 16 megapixels and equipped with Wi-Fi, allowing full access to the Google Play store so that you can download all the apps you’ll ever need (yes, you can even play Angry Birds on it), and even check your emails if you desire.

What’s more, the Coolpix S800c even looks a whole lot like a phone when you turn it around, thanks to the 3.5 inch OLED Touchscreen which dominates the back end.

But a camera is precisely what the device is: it boasts a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 10x zoom lens, built-in flash and can shoot up to eight frames a second, while it incorporates tons of effects and filters that means you’ll never have to mess around with Instagram again (so long as you can work out how to use them!).

Sounds pretty cool, but anyone who knows a thing or two about cameras will realize that the specs are not all that impressive. It’s a pretty low end camera to be quite honest, and furthermore, it would appear to be a pretty basic Android device too – the camera runs Android 2.3, Gingerbread version, which is old hat these days.

We’ll certainly be curious about how it performs, given that previous Wi-Fi enabled cameras have been troublesome at best with their clunky touchscreens that don’t always behave as they should.

Other aspects of the camera will also face scrutiny – for instance, does the fact that Android is running in the background affect its battery life? And what about all those viruses that have been known to plague Android – will hackers be able to go in and steal all of your ‘private’ photos?

Nikon has said that the Coolpix S800c goes on sale in September, so hopefully we’ll have more answers soon.
