DevOps movement has begun to take a good shape across the IT industry as Ops experts and development teams communicate, collaborate, and integrate toward a common goal, that is, to achieve the best in whatever they do. Nowadays, DevOps for Drupal is gaining momentum. The space is full of DevOps practices with Drupal, where everyone has its own opinion. So, whom you should listen to? Here are some tips from Kris Buytaert, a Linux and Open Source Consultant doing Linux and Open Source projects across the world. Kris is the Co-Author of Virtualization with Xen, was a maintainer of the openMosix HOWTO, and author of different technical publications.
Today’s environment for Dev and Ops has similar attributes and concerned areas, such as Version Control, Automated Build, Bugtracking, Continous integration, Integrated testing, and Automated deployment. Kris advises to bring Dev and Ops together as soon as the development process starts, and not at the time of deployment. It is important for both Dev and Ops to come together to break the silos, and create an ecosystem that supports continuous delivery through automation of build, deployment, and testing process. Parallel build pipelines and make all environments same. Sharing of environments also play an important role to properly implement DevOps for Drupal. And this can be done by building identical environment, sharing code, and having shared ownership of content, code, and configuration.
Manual installations are usually error- prone and non reproducible, leading to 61% of them as wrong deployments. But automating with Ops can improve the process to great extent, heading all installations and deployments in the right direction.
