What To Expect At IFA 2012

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, more popularly known as IFA, is set to kick off in Berlin, Germany on August 31 and will run through the 5th of September.  The IFA is the largest consumer electronics trade show, and having a spot at the event could mean well for business.  It’s the right time to show off new devices to make consumers drool and die of anticipation.

So what are we to expect at this upcoming event?  Here are the latest rumors and expectations for IFA 2012:

Sony

The Japanese company has three new handsets to offer, the Xperia T, V and J.  The Xperia T features a 4.6-inch HD Reality Display, a 13-megapixel camera that can record 1080p video, near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 processor, run Android 4.0 but will receive the 4.1 upgrade.  Gamers will be delighted as the device is PlayStation certified.  Expect the Xperia T to be available in the market come January of next year.

The Xperia V features the same thing as the Xperia T but it will have a smaller screen at 4.3-inch HD Reality Display, and will be Sony’s first LTE phone.  Also, Vperia V is dust- and water-resistant and has an IP57 rating, which means it can be submerged in water up to 1m deep for 30 minutes.  As for the Xperia J, it’s Sony’s affordable offering, which features a single-core 1GHz processor, run ICS, and only a 5-megapixel camera.

Samsung

The South Korean company is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 2 later today and will be featured in their booth at the IFA.  But aside from the Galaxy Note 2, they have more to offer, including a new Windows 8 all-in-one (AIO) Series 7 PC, which will be available in 23 and 27 inches.  The Series 7 AIO range builds on the Series 9 Notebook to “inherit Samsung’s advanced engineering craftsmanship with high finish and stylish design”.  They’ll also showcase their innovative 1:1 ratio LED square display (UD22B) and transparent display (NL22B), available the second half of 2012.

As for the smaller side of business, Samsung will also display a new range of high capacity, high speed SD and Micro SD cards.  Aside from the Galaxy Note 2 announcement, they’re also expected to unveil a Windows 8 hybrid tablet.

HTC

The Taiwanese electronics company is expected to unveil a 10-inch tablet at the IFA.  It wasn’t too long ago HTC unveiled the HTC Flyer at MWC, but HTC fans want something more than that.  As for the 10-inch tablet rumor, nothing juicy to tell yet, but one thing’s for sure, it will be an Android device.

Motorola

Nothing much is expected from the Google-owned Motorola Mobility during the event, as they’re having an event of their own on September 5 with Verizon.  According to sources, the two will unveil the Droid RAZRM 4G LTE, which features a 4.3 inch qHD 960 x 540 Super AMOLED Advanced display, a dual core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 chipset and 1GB’s of RAM,8 megapixel rear camera, a three megapixel front-facing camera, NFC, full GSM \ HSPA+ global roaming capabilities and 8GB of storage which can be expanded up to 32GB via Micro SD.  And it will be running a modified version of the Android ICS platform.

Also, Motorola sent save-the-dates to an event on September 18 which simply reads, “Let us take you to the Edge.”  So it looks like Motorola is planning on unveiling a new device at their own event, not to be overshadowed by other vendors.  Smart move.

Anyway, we have no clue yet as to what the Edge is, so it may be a new smartphone with no borders or a new tablet with no borders.  We’ll have to wait until September 18 or keep our eyes and ears open for the coming details.
