DH2i Virtualization for SQL Comes with Brains

DH2i is launching the 2012R2 release of DxConsole, its application virtualization solution. The main addition is DxSRM, a load balancer that works on the instance-level and introduces a lot of automation to the software. The module is available for Microsoft SQL environments.

DxSRM offers a lot of added intelligence in the form of three main functions. One of the things that the new DxConsole component does is automatically redirect new SQL instances to the servers with the smallest workloads, resulting in a performance increase. DxSRM also allows admins to set polices based on metrics such as CPU, memory and I/O usage – it will move instances based on these user-generated thresholds, and issue alerts based on changes that can also be defined manually.

Lastly, DHi2’s new software makes it possible to load-balance SQL instances to both on-site resources and remote cloud environments.

“Today, many IT organizations dedicate an inordinate amount of time and energy to Microsoft SQL Server management,” said Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group.  “I expect a solution such as DH2i’s DxConsole 2012R2 which enables its users to more easily and effectively manage their IT environment – while lowering costs, will be very well received.”

DH2i is not the only vendor that has enhanced its Microsoft SQL portfolio lately. Sanbolic did the same this week.

The company announced yesterday that its AppCluster Microsoft SQL Server platform is now certified to run on Amazon Web Services. Sanbolic got AWS partner status shortly after adding support for the Rackspace Cloud.

The database is converging with the cloud thanks solutions like those offered by DH2i and Sanbolic, which solve a lot of the problems that enterprises would normally have a difficult time tackling: high-availability of databases is tough to pull off cost-effectively even before taking hardware upgrades into account, and traditional environments require a lot of manual handling. The cloud can offer a more economic and reliable alternative.
