If you happen to be a nerd who’s good with facts and figures, then your future employment prospects are looking good. Or at least, they will be if you’re happy to work in the Wall Street big data industry.
Recruitment agency eFinancialCareers says that programming and development skills top the wish list of numerous Wall Street employers at the moment, driven by a desire to ramp up mobile-platform and big data development. The agency noted that dozens of firms were currently on the lookout for programmers with experience in working with databases, with ‘programming languages and databases’ being by far and away the most searched-for skill by employers this summer.
Much of this demand is being driven by big data, as Java and C programming skills were reported to be the most highly sought-after. Of course, Hadoop, the world’s most widely-used data engine, is all about Java, whilst there dozens of data applications that rely extensively on the C programming language for its speed of execution.
As well as these, those with skills in SQL are also in demand – SQL being the primary database query language used in the majority of relational databases these days.
Wall Street isn’t the only sector that is wedding itself to IT however – just last month, General Motors revealed that it was looking for as many as 10,000 tech workers to support its worldwide operations, beginning with the creation of 500 new IT positions at its new “innovation center” in Austin, Texas.
This was followed by the news that it’s planning a second center in Detroit, which will create an additional 1,500 IT jobs. As well as these two, GM would like to establish two more innovation centers in the US, as part of its plan to make up for a shortfall of developers and programmers in other parts of the country.
