Big Data is the Pattern that Connects, Enlists Wonder, says Jason Silva

We caught up with actor/film maker Jason Silva at IBM IOD at Data Week in NYC today, where he speaks on big data and how it’s changing the world. Silva mentioned how the divide between user and tool disappears as computers rapidly develop.

According to Silva, “we are all part of a co-evolving system that feeds on itself.” But that’s only a small portion of what Silva had to say on this larger system.  During a keynote at IOD’s kick off yesterday, Silva wowed attendees with a dynamic speech on big data trends, its importance for consumers and the need to better understand ourselves through data.

At IOD, SiliconAngle founder John Furrier and Wikibon founder and chief analyst Dave Vellante sat down with Silva at theCube to hear more on Silva’s perspective, touching on the self-quantified contributions to evolution, the context big data provides for human nature in the 21st century and much, much more.

One thing Silva touches on is the role the smartphone has played in this data-driven evolution. The smartphone is actually much cheaper, faster and stronger than the super computers in Stanford 40 years ago.  The new data touch point has set off a series of circumstances that makes companies and consumers alike “privvy,” as Silva notes, to see how the world truly works.

“Even though we’re using more technology to measure more things, the thing we’re learning is these patterns are happening. And our machine patterns are closing the loop. Forager ants looking for food mirror IP addresses on the internet…it enlists a sense of wonder in people.”

Silva is certainly a captivating speaker with great insight on the promise of big data, and it’s far too much to capture in a mere write-up.  Check out the video below for Silva’s entire interview with Vellante at theCube, and check back for ongoing editorials that highlight Silva’s big ideas on big data.
