The 2010 Stuxnet attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities proved that anyone with sufficient
know-how in terms of cyber-warfare can inflict some serious physical damage upon any
infrastructure in the world, even without an internet connection. Retired US Air Force Colonel Phillip Meilinger expects that “[a]… bloodless yet potentially devastating new method of war” is coming. Yet a lack of understanding about instances of cyber-warfare such as the case with Stuxnet has led to confused expectations about what cyber-attacks can achieve.
