Analytics software maker TIBCO officially launched the Spotfire Extension for OpenSpirit at the Digital Oilfields Summit, held in London this week. OpenSpirit sold vendor-agnostic analytics technology to big oil and gas before TIBCO acquired it in September 2010.
Many industry-specific products are based on OpenSpirit, including ESRI ArcGIS, GeoFrame, OpenWorks, the Public Petroleum Data Model and several other offerings. The companies that the new add-on is catering to are most likely already using one or the other in their production environments, and now they have added incentives to use Spotfire in conjunction with these apps.
TIBCO’s BI platform seamlessly integrates with any OpenSpirit-enabled data store, which means that data scientists working for an energy firm can gain much faster access to wellhead logs, directional surveys and other critical information.
“Predictive analytics is key to the future of the digital oilfield, but to make those predictions you need highly integrated systems that can handle big data,” said Steve Farr, TIBCO’s marketing head. “Spotfire Extension for OpenSpirit enables engineers to predict what will happen on their oilfields and respond as events occur, whether it be adjusting the performance of an individual wellhead, examining the future output of an entire field, or calculating the estimated ultimate recovery.”
Several different verticals are achieving faster reaction times in BI thanks to new analytical technologies, and it’s piqued interest across the industry. Among them is Cloudera, which introduced a new real-time MapReduce alternative at this week’s Strata Conference + Hadoop World. Impala, as it’s called, takes Hadoop beyond batch processing: the software, which took two full years to develop, can handle certain data streams much more effectively at the “speed of thought.” The product is available in both open-source and commercial editions.
