Hospital Handles Big Data Explosion with EMC Isilon

St. Dominic Hospital, an acute care facility in Jackson, Mississippi, has consolidated its legacy storage infrastructure onto an EMC Isilon scale-out storage system chosen to meet the demands of the Big data explosion. Isilon provides dramatically faster, more reliable access to medical images and patient records and supports the 20 percent annual data growth the provider is experiencing, as well as expansion of the hospital facility. Nimble Storage Exceeds $100 Million Run Rate

Flash-optimized hybrid storage pioneer Nimble Storage surpassed a $100 million run rate in bookings in FY 4Q12, which ended January 31, 2013, after just two-and-a-half years of shipping products. Nimble quadrupled its number of customers to more than 1,100 customers and has shipped more than 2,000 systems to date. This year it significantly increased its global reach in Europe and entered the AsiaPac market with offices in Australia and Singapore. More

 

IBM Signs Contract to Manage Ontario’s Smart Meter Data Management System

IBM has signed a contract renewal with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to operate Ontario’s Meter Data Management and Repository (MDM/R) with new computing infrastructure and and updated operating environment. IBM won the five-year CDN $68.5 million contract with options to extend to seven or 10 years in a competitive procurement process. As part of the agreement, IBM will enhance the overall performance of the MDM/R with a new computing infrastructure, enhanced Web services to support increasing volumes of requests for information, enhanced DR, and operational improvements to reduce risk and cost. More

 

IBM Completes Acquisition of StoredIQ

IBM has completed the acquisition of StoredIQ, a privately held company in Austin, Texas. The acquisition enhances IBM’s services helping customers derive value from Big Data, respond more efficiently to litigation and regulations, and dispose of information that has outlived its purpose automatically. Thomas Cook Sees Online Performace Soar with Dell Foglight

The Thomas Cook online travel agency has achieved a tangible business advantage through a massive increase in IT effectiveness achieved using  the Foglight performance monitoring system from Dell acquisition Quest Software. Thomas Cook’s IT operations has optimized the performace of its online travel agency and slashed man-time-to-resolution by as much as 97 percent, resulting in an estimated 30 percent increase in bookings, suing Foglight. More 

 

Dell Adds High Performance Top-of-Rack and Blade Switches, M IO Aggregator to Network Portfolio

 Dell has announce the S4820T 1/10/40 GbE top-of-rack switch, the MXL 10/40 GbE blade switch and PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator to the Dell Networking portfolio. It also announced commercial availability of OpenFLow to support software-defined networking on Dell Z9000 an S4810 switches. More

 

Microsoft Attacks Google on Targeted E-mail Ads

In the latest shot in the ongoing war between the two companies, Microsoft has announced a campaign titled “Don’t Get Scroogled by Gmail” on Outlook.com to educate users about Google’s practice of analyzing the contents of Gmail e-mails to sell and target ads.  A Microsoft Corp.-commissioned study by GfK Roper found that 70 percent of consumers do not know that major e-mail providers routinely auto-search personal e-mail to match ads to individuals. Brazil Surpasses 25 Million Broadband Connections

The latest edition of Cisco’s Broadband Barometer, conducted by IDC and focused on connections of 2 Mbps and over, shows 25.2 million connections in Brazil in December, excluding smartphone connections. According to detailed data from January to June 2012, Brazil has 35 mobile connections for evry 100 fixed-line connections. Penetration is 3.1% mobile and 8.9% fixed-line per 100 inhabitants. More

 

Ernst & Young Names Greg Cudahy Performance Improvement Practice Lead

Greg Cudahy has joined Ernst and Young LLP to head its U.S. Performance Improvement Practice. He comes from Accenture, where he was North American Operations practice leader. He will oversee the firm’s client work and service offerings related to supply chain, finance, customer, transformation and collaboration, and performance technology. More

 

Industrial Products M&A Activity Increases in 4Q12 Says PwC US

Merger and acquisition activity in the global industrial products industry rose modestly on a sequential basis during the fourth quarter of 2012 according to a report from PwC US. Mega-deals of more than $1 billion grew, driving total revenue in several sectors, while financial investors increased their participation in some M&A market sectors. More
