Android and iPhone fanbois will argue till their blue in the face over which mobile operating system is is the best, but what about fans of Windows Phone? Granted, there’s not too many of them around, but those that are generally prefer to have a quick giggle to themselves whenever these arguments arise.
In its latest commercial promoting the Windows Phone, Microsoft pokes fun at the never-ending debate between Apple and Android lovers, positioning its own platform as the more ‘civilized’ option. Don’t argue, just switch, or so the commercial tells us.
The new ad takes place in the backdrop of a wedding scene, during which all of the guests eagerly take out their smartphones to snap some pics of the happy couple.
The camera focuses on one guest who stands up to snap a photo with his hefty Samsung phablet, prompting an iPhone-wielding guest next to him to ask if he’ll please move his “enormous phone” out of the way. “Don’t you mean the enormously awesome Galaxy?”, comes the curt response from phablet boy.
This prompts an older iPhone fan girl to chime in, asking Siri to search for a “one-trick pony, which prompts a query from someone else, who cheekily asks her, “aren’t you a little young to have an iPhone?” From that point onwards, the scene descend into chaos, with the guests literally coming to blows over whose phone is best.
All the while, two caterers are calmly videotaping the rapidly degenerating scene on their Nokia Lumias, with one asking the other “Do you think if they knew about the Nokia Lumia, they’d stop fighting?”. To which her friend responds, “They like fighting,” just as one of the guests rips open his shirt to reveal an Apple logo tattooed onto his chest. Finally the commercial switches to a blue screen that simply reads “Don’t fight. Switch”.
The ad is all very tongue in cheek, but there is a ring of truth to what Microsoft has to say, with many Windows Phone owners reporting satisfaction with their new handsets. Even so, Windows Phone continues to trail its rivals by some distance, with most people being put off by the perceived lack of apps on the Microsoft alternative. Things are getting better however. Recent figures from Kantar Worldpanel show that Windows Phone has now taken a 4.1% overall share of the US smartphone market, while Nokia itself reports that it sold 5.6 million Lumias in the last quarter. Moreover, Microsoft recently silenced its critics in the tablet space too, with the latest sales figures from Strategy Analytics showing that Redmond has sold almost 3 million Windows 8 and RT tablets since the turn of the year to take an impressive 7.4% share of the market.
Still, Microsoft’s latest attempts to poke fun at its competitors begs the question – do these ads actually have an impact on sales? While there’s no evidence on hand to suggest they do, it’s clear enough that Microsoft believes the tactic works, as this isn’t the first time its relied on mocking its rivals to win over users. Earlier this year we saw Redmond launch a series of commercials attacking Google’s Gmail over its practice of ‘reading’ users emails to deliver targeted ads, promoting its Outlook.com email service as a more ‘private’ alternative.
But are these ads funny or just desperate? Watch the clip below and decide for yourself…
