On today’s SiliconANGLE Live NewsDesk Show (see live feed below or visit youtube.com/siliconangle to watch on-demand), we learn about Fanhattan’s ‘Fan TV’, the new set-top box in town like Apple TV, Roku and new integrated systems like Microsoft’s Xbox One, which features TV streaming as well.
Fanhattan debuted its new set-top box ‘Fan TV’ at the D11 conference yesterday. Silicon Valley startup Fanhattan, known for their web service and apps, had secretly been working on hardware that would bring those services into the home, and the finished product is what we saw on stage at D11 yesterday.
So far the marriage of live television with streaming media services on Apple TV and Roku has failed to deliver on the hype. Fanhattan originally gained market share with the TV/movie discovery app that aggregated data from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon and iTunes — a personalized video aggregation and programming guide of sorts.
‘Fan TV’, an Yves Behar-designed entertainment system, combines the functions of cable set-top boxes and streaming devices like Apple TV and Roku. ‘Fan TV’ includes live and on-demand TV, streaming services, and a cloud DVR. The controller allows for swipe and tap gestures and is designed with the distinct ability to not have to look at it. Unlike Apple TV and Roku, Fanhattan is working with cable TV service providers rather than selling their device via retail stores. The success of ‘Fan TV’ ultimately will rest on the shoulders of cable providers and whether they buy-in on the device.
Joining us now to provide the details on this new device and discuss its ability to compete in the already crowded set-top box market is SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto. (See the live broadcast, embedded below ~ if you missed today’s topic, check our YouTube channel for archived clips.)
Some of the things we’ll be discussing with Casaretto include the differentiating features of Fan TV, the amount of support it’s receiving from cable providers, and its market position.
