Weekly Big Data Review: Change of Management at Cloudera

This week Cloudera’s Mike Olson dropped a bombshell when he revealed that he’s resigning as CEO, and Sqrrl rolled out a new release of its Big Data security platform. Cisco made a few headlines as well after business development VP Hilton Romanski blogged about the acquisition of data virtualization specialist Composite Software.

Cloudera, the company credited with pioneering the Hadoop industry, announced a massive C-level change on Wednesday. Tom Reilly, the former chief executive officer of cybersecurity firm ArcSight, stepped into the shoes of Mike Olson, who has assumed the positions of chief strategy officer and chairman.

Olson said in a statement that the role change will let him spend more time managing the firm’s engineering teams and engaging partners and customers. Analysts speculate that Reilly was brought  on board to handle Cloudera’s long anticipated (but unconfirmed) initial public offering.

The other major Big Data update we reported on Wednesday was the launch of Sqrrl Enterprise 1.1, the latest version of the Accumulo-based analytics platform. Sqrrl’s new software features a suite of deployment and configuration tools, new indexing capabilities, and the ability to ingest data in real-time. Other features include text search, improved support for Active Directory and SQL, and the ability to convert Accumulo key/value pairs into hierarchical JSON.

Following the news from Sqrrl and Cloudera came Cisco’s announcement of its acquisition of Composite Software for $180 million. The San Mateo, Calif.-based firm sells software that consolidates data from across a network and makes that information appear as if were stored in one place. This functionality empowers enterprise developers to utilize their organizations’ various data sources.

Composite’s platform will be integrated with software from SolveDirect, a provider of cloud-based process integration solutions that Cisco acquired in March.
