Kickstarting Data Dealer–A Smart Game on Online Privacy

With online privacy becoming an ever-increasing concern, thanks to NSA–Snowden debacle, here comes a super clever game on online privacy: The Data Dealer.

Data Dealer is a browser game about surveillance, privacy, the social impact of technology, and fun–and is aimed at spreading awareness about online privacy and concerns related to today’s digital age in a new and fun way. You can run your own Smoogle & Tracebook, track people, collect personal profiles and sell them to whoever you want. This game is actually a satire on PRISM, where players can Play ‘God’ with other people’s data.

Talking about if Data Dealer is a serious game, the team said,

“Data Dealer is solely for your entertainment! Ever wanted to run your own dating platform, some crappy mobile apps or your own Smoogle & Tracebook? Collecting data for fun and profit? Now you can! :)

But, but, but…it’s true: By playing you could also discover some answers. Who has your data? Does it matter that they have it? And what are the risks, both to you, and to society? What the hell is this data-driven future we’re creating? Data Dealer is also an interactive exploration of the personal data ecosystem, based on in-depth research.”

Data Dealer is a nonprofit project, created by a small group of developers, game designers, open source advocates, researchers and digital rights activists. So far, the game has won accolades and has been mentioned in The New Yorker, ProPublica, Fast Company, Guardian, Mashable, Washington Post, Le Monde and many other prestigious publications. It also won the prominent “Games for Change Award” in NYC.

The German demo of Data Dealer was launched in 2012, and recently they released the English demo.

According to the team, the full-featured multiplayer version is about 80% finished. The game is 100% free to play; but the team behind the Data Dealer needs funds to keep up with the pace. That’s why they have launched a Data Dealer Kickstarter campaign for a funding injection. Previously, the team received funding from the Creative Agency of the City of Vienna, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture, and the Internet Foundation Austria.

The deadline of campaign is on Thursday July 11th.
