Cable cord cutters have been waiting for smart TVs to hit the mainstream for some time, and manufacturers are striving to meet growing consumer demand. According to a recent report from media research firm TDG, 14 percent of households with broadband internet owned an Apple TV, Roku box, or similar streaming platform in 2012. However, the connected TV market is slowly being digested by smart TVs. The number of households that owned a smart TV more than doubled up from 12 percent in 2011 to 25 percent in 2012. Smart TVs that come equipped with apps offered by manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and most recently Vizio.

Yesterday Vizio unveiled its next generation smart TV platform: VIZIO Internet Apps Plus. The platform combines a best-in-class connected TV experience with an all-new platform and additional apps. The new smart TV experience debuted on Vizio’s all-new M-Series Razor LED smart TV collection. Vizio Internet Apps Plus aims to offer consumers with the most finished and intuitive smart TV experience possible: full-screen app browsing and discovery, HTML 5 app support, app control by mobile devices, and its app launcher.

While the “smart” part of smart TVs is not used by all (reads: the apps), 69 percent of those users surveyed said they connect their smart TV to the Internet. But is cable losing young adults? According to the most recent cross-platform report from Nielsen, traditional TV consumption continues to drop off on a year-over-year basis among 18-24-year-olds, though the rate of decline slowed somewhat in Q1.
