HP Vertica Big Data Conference 2013 Round Up: Big Data is Not Hype | #HPBigData2013

The increasing volume, variety and velocity of information enables organizations to tackle new problems and challenges. One of the things striking the market nowadays is that organizations are trying to pick their big data engine or platform not just for analytics, but for a multitude of different data needs.

Hadoop, for example, is a distributed file system and run almost all analytics and transform processed data. HP Vertica is designed to ease the flow data from differing sources and types into the platform, making it seem much more like a Hadoop-like environment. Hundreds of customers and a growing ecosystem of partners leverage HP Vertica Analytics Platform for Big Data monetize on a massive scale and high speed.

At the recently concluded HP Vertica Big Data Conference, HP shared how they are deriving measurable value from the most demanding and impressive Big Data analytics initiatives in the industry. SiliconANGLE has extensive coverage of the event with an in-depth discussion about the impact of HP big data analytics solution on enterprise IT.

Vertica – HP is Keeping Up with Big Data

One of the things HP sought to do with Vertica was to make it really easy for people to get information onto their platform. After acquiring Vertica two years ago, the analytics platform has become a pillar of HP’s recently announced HAVEn Initiative.

Shilpa Lawande, Vice President of Software Engineering and Customer Support for HP Vertica in theCUBE said Vertica probably now runs some of the largest analytics installations. Leveraging the ecosystem of partners helps Vertica the ability to handle data over time and provides solutions that shift the burden from the disk to the CPU.

HP is enabling our customers and partners to deploy Vertica anywhere and everywhere, whether it’s cloud appliances, software, or the like. The good news is that after the HP acquisition, Vertica attracted a fresh set of partners.

Andrew MacBean, VP of Vertica Ecosystem & Solutions, said there are partners who are developing on top of Vertica, designing tools that enable users to better manage Vertica. The company wants to continue to grow partner base, alongside partners who want to adopt Vertica technology. MacBean expects to see an increasing number of companies embracing the HP technology and the Big Data portfolio.

Going forward, Vertica aims to grow the community of Vertica users and professionals formally and informally. The company aims to increase contributed user content to its Github community to enhance knowledge of best practices and use-cases. They are also developing certifications so that customers can easily identify Vertica professionals.

Vertica Analytics Platform – Big Data Ocean

Companies want to take all the information assets that they have and they want to put them into a safe place. As the Software Defined Data Center continues to see more software solutions penetrate the data center, HP is turning to larger and more comprehensive Big Data Solutions. HP HAVEn, which is HP’s big data platform, can be used for just about anything when it comes to information and data. Currently, HP has more than 700 connectors as part of HAVEn coming from Autonomy, Enterprise Security Group, and the ArcSight core Logger.

Brian Weiss, the vice president of Marketing for Autonomy, shared the use of the Vertica Analytics Platform and the future of Big Data across all enterprises. As Big Data continues to evolve and grow, Weiss said Autonomy’s ability to discern big data information allows a client to take in the data and learn more about the people associated with it. Autonomy’s suite of intelligent products and services are now capable of extracting ocean of data from various sources.

George Kadifa, Executive Vice President for HP Software, shared his view on developments around the HAVEn. With HAVEn, HP is trying to capture of all kinds of information that is varied – from video streams to tweets. HP is able to capture 100 percent of the information generated for the world, which HP categorizes as machine, business, and human data.

Commenting on application system and focus on developers, Kadifa said developers are core to the development of HAVEn. For new class of applications, HP is bringing together in HAVEn is Hadoop, Autonomy, Vertica, Enterprise Security, core assets, and large pool number of applications.

Overall, John Furrier commented HP Vertica event provided the most comprehensive software vision from HP, a company whose main line of revenue is typically supported by hardware and compute products. HP has the complete ecosystem of products – whether it’s software only, appliance, or cloud. They have the ability now to deliver however the customer wants it, and provide not only the flexible technologies, but the flexible business capabilities to make that happen with a lot of ease.
