Dell is preparing for a major transition within the company, as it leaves the public trading arena and returns to being privately owned. Along with that financial transition, Dell is also moving away from the isolated PC and laptop sales and moving toward a more comprehensive enterprise-level offering. Dell’s converged infrastructure offerings are at the forefront of this metamorphosis.
The Cube’s John Furrier and Stu Miniman talked with Nariman Teymourian, Dell’sExecutive Director of Converged Infrastructure Solutions at VMworld 2013. They began by asking Teymourian what has changed in converged infrastructure for Dell.
Teymourian said that Michael Dell likes to say, “We are the world’s biggest startup”, referring to the company’s drive, vision, and willingness to adapt to the changing landscape. For Dell’s enterprise clients, they may have started buying laptops or desktops from Dell, but they will eventually start looking at more options and come to Dell for solutions to compute, storage, and networking. Dell is developing holistic solutions for customers.
Dell has made several acquisitions to help with this transition, including the major acquisition of Gale Technologies, a company that offered infrastructure automation software. For Dell, the value of shares on storage are up and its acquisitions have added needed value to the company.
Dell customers, Teymourian reiterated, do not see Dell as simply a desktop provider. They see it as an enterprise partner, bringing together all of the facets of converged infrastructure. It is not about market share but rather about solving real business issues, reducing total cost of ownership and giving customers solutions that are easy to buy, easy to deploy, easy to use, easy to manage, and easy to support.
Dell is also working closely with VMware to allow customers to easily integrate virtualization and infrastructure. Ultimately, the goal is to provide customers with a single management solution that they can drop into place and implement.
