QLogic Tightens VMware Integration with New Drivers, Cloud Service

Fibre Channel vendor QLogic is attending this week’s VMworld 2013 conference to show off new inbox drivers for its FlexSuite and FabricCache adapters, along with a web-based version of the QConvergeConsole Plug-in for vCenter Server.

The drivers reduce installation time by eliminating the need for a download and automatically identifying the appropriate version of the host operating system or hypervisor. Citrix says that the software also improves performance thanks to tighter integration with the VMkernel.

The inbox drivers are joined by a hosted edition of QConvergeConsole that promises to centralize and simplify the management of network adapters in VMware-virtualized environments.

“QLogic and VMware have a long history of collaborating on high performance virtualization solutions for enterprise SANs, beginning with QLogic’s delivery of the industry’s first VMware certified Fibre Channel adapter,” said Amit Vashi, the vice president of products, technology and planning at QLogic. “QLogic Fibre Channel adapters are tuned to deliver superior performance for VMware environments and are now enhanced with improved native driver support and Web-based plug-ins for increased operational efficiency across VMware hosts and clusters by centralizing management and improving the end-user experience.”

Today’s announcement comes on the heels of QLogic’s decision to exit the ASIC market in an effort to boost the bottom line. The move is part of a $23 million cost cutting plan initiated by CFO and interim chief executive Jean Hu.

QLogic reported a 13.2 percent revenue decline in the first quarter, a figure that breaks down into a 13.7 percent drop in server and storage connectivity sales and a 10 percent dip in Legacy Connectivity Product revenue. The company’s profit plummeted 47.4 percent year over year to 10 cents per share, three percent more than the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks.
