Couchbase Raises $25 Million to Drive NoSQL Product Into Enterprise and Beyond

NoSQL database and thought-leader Couchbase has just announced a $25 million round of funding to expand into enterprise growth in series D funding. This comes amid huge sales increases for the company of over 400% and will allow them to reach out into even more sectors–the database is already known to be used by enterprise giants such as AOL, Cisco, LinkedIn, Orbitz and Salesforce.com.

Couchbase Server is a hybrid solution that combines the functionality of a key-value (due to memcached-compatible protocol) and document-oriented databases (by storing the data in the JSON-formatted and the presence of secondary indexes). The advantage of Couchbase is to facilitate the clustering of relational databases and to manage clients on a case by case.

Couchbase has been on a roll since emerging as the love-child of MemeBase and CouchDB. The company’s been a solid supporter of the growing OpenStack initiative, while growing its own product base and board as well.  Last year, Couchbase has secured a $14 million in series C funding to accelerate the delivery of simple, fast and elastic NoSQL database technologies.

The company has again raised another $25 million Series D funding round led by Adams Street Partners and joined by existing investors Accel Partners, Mayfield Fund, North Bridge Venture Partners, and Ignition Partners.

The new funding will help Couchbase to invest more aggressively in new products innovation. In addition, the company will use this funding to expand its local presence in North America, Europe, Israel, Japan, and Korea and open offices in China, India, Brazil, and Argentina.

“We have seen a significant increase in the adoption of NoSQL by enterprises,” said Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase.  “They are doing deep strategic evaluations of NoSQL technologies and our leadership in providing easy scalability, consistently high performance, and cross data center replication has allowed us to consistently win these evaluations. This funding will allow us to rapidly expand the number of enterprises we serve around the world.”

With the recent release of Couchbase Server 2.0, the company saw a 400% increase sales in 2013 and won many new contracts that involve broad deployments of mission critical enterprise applications. As Couchbase looks to develop new standards around the NoSQL community, its latest round of funding will surely help the company as it moves forward with new product and feature roll-outs.
