Flash: Real-Time Solution for “Shrinking Infrastructure” Says Fusion-IO | #oow13

Gary Orenstein, the EVP at Fusion-io, discussed flash and storage market trends with theCUBE co-hosts Dave Floyer and Dave Vellante, live from the 2013 edition of Oracle OpenWorld.

Commenting on the company’s focus at OpenWorld, Orenstein said, “we want to help customers make more transactions, make faster decisions,” all at a lower cost, and flash is the answer to that. At the event, they aim to share their solutions and integrations.

“We knew there would be a big focus on in-memory at Oracle OpenWorld,” Orenstein explained. Companies need to not only increase number of transactions, but also reduce query time and increase performance. “Customers are looking to do essentially multiple things simultaneously.”

Another common issue Orenstein mentioned was the need to ingest, process, present, and archive data all at once. This cannot be done on traditional infrastructure, but flash provides a better cost/performance balance.

Flash is fitting in between DRAM and disk drives, Orenstein explained. “When we talk about Flash memory performance, we forget to remind ourselves that there are huge opportunities in cost savings, in shrinking infrastructure” with no impact on performance.

Flash benefits in real-time

Host David Floyer mentioned that when it comes to real time or near-real time analytics, the requirement for flash is very important. Orenstein then explained that real time is achievable with flash technology, which runs in the server. “There really is no room for something that’s not real-time in this day and age.”

  • Transforming applications

Commenting on how Fusion-io customers are transforming applications, Orenstein said, “we’ve seen a tremendous range of applications that customers are using. Oracle is the foundation layer.”

ION data accelerator, an all-flash appliance built on familiar and existing servers, is one of the solutions that is in high demand by consumers. It works with HP, IBM, and Dell servers and helps with analytics, shrinking time from many hours to minutes. Previously users had to run queries after business hours and make decisions the next morning; now it takes just a few minutes to run them. Analytics results are available almost immediately allowing for same day decisions to be made.

“Time is money. And when we enable someone to run the transactions that they need on a daily basis, plus help them tune their analytics at the same time, all of these things come back to creating time opportunities for our customers,” Orenstein said.

  • Innovating in open source

Asked to share his take on open source, Orenstein said that “the open source arena is going to continue to provide the innovation that is needed to showcase what is possible with these new technologies,” including flash. “I do think that open source is in a very unique position to move quickly and show what’s possible with both open source and commercial apps.”
