VMware injects analytics into virtualization lineup

While Hewlett-Packard is busy wooing HP Discover attendees with new cloud solutions and converged systems, VMware is continuing on its journey to move up the increasingly commoditized virtualization stack in pursuit of sustainable margins.

The EMC subsidiary is rolling out IT Business Management Suite 1.0 Standard, an analytics tool that provides data center operators with visibility into infrastructure costs and energy consumption. The Advanced and Enterprise editions, which are versioned 8.0, come with “persona-based dashboards” that can be targeted to specific roles, including CIOs, CFOs, IT project managers and line-of-business execs.

The platform works across both on- and off-premise deployments, underlining VMware’s growing focus on the convergence of private and public clouds. The virtualization titan had previously launched a data center near London to make its vCloud Hybrid Service available for customers in the UK. IT Business Management is complemented by VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.8, which lets administrators monitor application performance across Hyper-V and AWS environments. It also introduces additional metrics for a “broad range” of storage arrays and applications, including Exchange and SQL Server.

The new releases are joined by the latest version of vCloud Automation Center. The software includes a service catalog and supports DevOps automation tools through vCloud Application Director.

“Providing cloud management solutions that simplify and automate how IT is managed is key to helping our customers on their journey to deliver IT-as-a-Service,” said Ramin Sayar, the SVP of Cloud Management at VMware. “With the availability of new products and enhancements across our management portfolio, customers can take advantage of the business opportunities that exist whether it’s increasing business agility, enabling cost transparency of IT services or expanding to the hybrid cloud.”
