Good Technology reports on app, platform and device preferences

Businesswoman Using Cellular Phone OutdoorsGood Technology has put out the latest release of their Mobility Index Report.  Good Technology is a leader in the enterprise mobile market space and they’ve compiled this latest Q4 2013 report of statistics and data to illustrate some interesting facts regarding device activations and enterprise applications.  The findings reinforce a number of incoming trends by detailing total activations down to device types and they also show some interesting BYOD statistics.

Anyone bored with BYOD yet?  It seems so – yesterday.  Except it’s not. This is right now people..  The report indicates that BYOD is on the rise as the number of employee-owned smartphones have more than doubled from 2012 – 2014.  What does that mean to the enterprise?  Well first off, this is still a very fertile field still in the midst of an incredible growth pattern.  It also means that BYOD concerns are as valid as ever, such as app security, app experience, cloud architecture, file sharing and more.

Pac-Man anyone?

BlackBerry is dying and iOS is growing.  Organizations are migrating away from BlackBerry to secure their data on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.  The enterprise market is activating more iOS devices than Android and Windows devices.  Android rates were down for the quarter.  Windows the same.  BlackBerry – slow, slow, but inevitable death.  This is not a big surprise as two new iPhone models were released near the beginning of time covered by the report.  New product is a selling product for Apple.

Enterprise Apps are exploding.  Something has to go on all these new activations, and enterprises are embracing the app.  With these new platforms, organizations are leveraging mobile apps to make more employees more collaborative and engaged.

People are editing documents – lots of them, but that’s not all.  Document editing is the enterprise app of choice on both smartphones and tablets, with custom apps and file access following close behind.  Speaking of tablets, that’s another good place for Apple with iPads leading the way in activations at 91.4 percent.

The trove of data in the report is telling of where things are going and though this is based on Good’s sizable installation base, it is a great collection of information with lots of insight.  And we’ve learned a few things along the way – iOS is here to stay, BlackBerry is not, Windows is still the same, enterprise apps are exploding, and there is no end in sight for the BYOD phenomenon.  Users are also editing a lot of documents and business functionality is at the top of the list in mobile app behaviors.
