MWC wraps up with Blackphone, YotaPhone and more

BlackphoneThe Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona is wrapping up today, and there are still a lot of devices that are intriguing the tech industry and consumers alike.  Before the event closes its doors, let’s look at what other devices consumers can look forward to in the near future.

The Blackphone

If you’re still worried about the government spying on you or companies tracking your web activities, then the Blackphone may just be what you need.

The Blackphone is a joint venture from global encrypted communications service Silent Circle and mobile phone solutions outfit Geeksphone which runs on a special security-oriented version of Android called PrivatOS and comes with a full suite of privacy-enabled apps, including Silent Phone, Silent Text, and Silent Contacts.  It also offers anonymous search, private browsing, secure cloud file storage, remote-wipe, device recovery tool, secure video chats, and smart disabling of all Wi-Fi except trusted hotspots.

The Blackphone features a 4.7” HD IPS screen, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, LTE connectivity, 2GHz quad-core processor, 8MP rear camera, and 1.3MP front camera.  Available now for pre-order at $629, the Blackphone will start shipping in June.

Next gen YotaPhone

Yota Devices unveiled its next generation YotaPhone at MWC.  The YotaPhone is a dual-screen smartphone that features an E-ink screen on one side, and an LCD screen as its main screen.  The point of the dual screens is to save on battery life, as you can choose what information appears on which screen.  The YotaPhone faced several delays in the past, losing out on some attention, but the revamped version of the device may pique the interest of consumers.

The next gen YotaPhone now features both screens to be touch enabled, and the E-ink side is always on.  Which means you can see all the information you need at a glance even without picking up the device.  The E-ink side also supports gestures controls and comes with special YotaPhone gestures.  Since it’s always on, Put2Back applications will make your phone quite interesting as you can put your favorite quotes, photos, or even a countdown to an event you’ve been looking forward to.

YotaPhone runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, features a 1.7 GHz dual core Krait processor, 4.3” 720×1280 LCD, 4.3” 360×640 EPD, 13MP rear camera with LED flash, 1MP front camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, and a 1800mAh battery among other things.

It will be released in Russia and Europe later this year, and is expected to be released in the US by 2015.

Fujitsu’s bumpy screen

Smartphones and tablets deliver vivid, realistic images on the screen, but when you touch it, you’re brought back to reality because you can’t feel the texture of the image you are looking at.  Fujitsu aims to revolutionize the mobile experience using tactile sensation.  Tactile sensation makes it feel like you’re touching the actual thing, like the bumpy, scaly back of an alligator.  This is possible through the haptic, or tactic, sensory technology.  The touchscreen display delivers ultrasonic vibrations to simulate the texture of an image that could make you think like you are touching something slippery, wet, rough, or bumpy.

Fujitsu aims to bring tactile sensation to market by 2015.

Huawei MediaPad X1

At MWC, Huawei not only unveiled the Bluetooth headset/fitness tracker SmartBand B1 and the Firefox OS-based Y300, it also unveiled the world’s thinnest and lightest tablet, the MediaPad X1.

The MediaPad X1 is a 7” tablet that allows the user to make calls, so it’s more of a phablet.  It measures 103.9mm wide, weighs 239g, and its aluminum body is only 7.18mm thick.  It has a 7” 1,920 x 1,200 LTPS display, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded with up to 32GB of removable microSD, 1.6GHz quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU, 2GB RAM, Mali-450 MP4 GPU, WiFi 802.11n, and 150Mbps LTE Cat 4.  Though the device is relatively thin, don’t let that fool you as Huawei managed to cram a whopping 5000 mAh battery inside it, which means it lasts days longer compared to other smartphones.
