4 alternatives to Flipboard & Zite (that haven’t been acquired yet)

Flipboard, the news reader and content aggregator service, has partnered with CNN and also acquired Zite, the intelligent magazine, from the news company. So in the event Flipboard shuts down Zite, here’s some alternatives to consider.

It is expected that Zite’s service will be shattered in the future, but before that happens, its technology and features will already have been integrated to Flipboard.

For those of you that aren’t fans of Flipboard, or are Zite users who now seek a new  reader, here are some alternatives to both services.

4 alternatives to Flipboard & Zite

 .

Facebook Paper

If you’re more into reading about the news as well as keeping on top of your social world, Paper is a good option.  In some ways it’s like Flipboard, as you flip open stories to read them in their entirety, with photos and videos being placed front and center.  You can personalize what type of content that streams on your feed, create your own content, and share content to your friends, or Facebook users in general.

If you’re not a Facebook fan, you’ll probably want to stay away from this app as it centers on content created by friends, people you follow, and other brands, or publications you follow.  The upside is, with millions of Facebook users, you’ll never run out of things to discover.

Paper is currently only available for iOS users in the US, but there’s a quick trick to download Paper if you’re not from the US.

Feedly

This service is one of the top choices for people who sought a Google Reader replacement.  It allows users to create their own Feedly experience by allowing them to choose which content creators they want to get news from.  Use your Google account to start using the service which you can enjoy using your computer or mobile devices as the app is available for iOS and Android.

Feedly is more of a news aggregator than a social aggregator, intended for people who want to get the latest updates about topics they are interested in while on the go.  Using the mobile app is easy – just flick through content and if you find something you like, just hit the “+” sign to add it to your own little magazine.  You can make your own categories to sort out the articles or use the default categories.

LinkedIn Pulse

LinkedIn Pulse offers a more professional news aggregator, one that keeps you up to date with the business side of things.  What sets it apart from other content aggregators is that users have access to not only trusted publications but also LinkedIn influencers known for their insightful posts.  You can easily share, like, and comment on articles shared by people in your network or see what’s trending worldwide and join conversations.  LinkedIn Pulse is available for iOS and Android.

Reverb

A newcomer in the content aggregator arena is Reverb, a service that uses its deep experience in content analysis and recommendations, to deliver a personalized experience for users.  It is optimized for the iPad as topics are presented in a word wall, which makes it easy for users to see the trending topics, and to view collections of stories.  Just tap on a word to see what’s in the news, or what people in your social circle are talking about.
