Atlassian unlocks first fully integrated Git development solution for enterprises

Atlassian logoAtlassian, the provider of enterprise software, has launched its product development solution called Atlassian Git Essentials. It is the company’s first fully integrated development solution for Git.

Atlassian Git Essentials uses the capabilities of the JIRA Issue Management Software and promises a radical change the way company works today. It provides a unified interface for software development teams to date information and measures workflow throughout the development of the project–from issues and code check-ins to build status and project progress.

Git is now universally accepted as revision control system for many open source developers. Git effectively manages large code base, but its functionality is somewhat limited for enterprises.

“We’ve seen a lot of acceleration in the last year around distributed development teams, and then distributed version control is a natural solution for a lot of those teams working asynchronously who don’t want to trip over each other,” said Bryan Rollins, general manager of Atlassian’s JIRA products group. “But it does mean sometimes that coordinated effort by development managers, if you’ve got three different teams in three different countries working on different parts of a problem, how can you get that singular view of the problem?”

Atlassian Git Essentials provides an integrated suite of Atlassian tools to run a Git-based software development project, from initial specifications to delivery of the final product. The new Atlassian Git Essentials solution includes the latest versions of Atlassian JIRA for issue management, JIRA Agile for agile planning and development, Stash for enterprise Git source code management and Bamboo for continuous integration.

The new product is aimed up at enterprise-level distributed source control that is integrated with issue tracking. Git Essential will allow for customization or integration into other platforms, and is already able to handle Subversion and Mercurial. Enterprise development teams now have the freedom of development process, especially if teams are working across different locations.

“We’ve taken away many of the headaches that prevent development teams from getting software to their customers quickly,” said Eric Wittman, Atlassian’s general manager of the developer tools business unit. “Our goal is to optimize software development so that developers can spend their time writing awesome code and managers have critical insights needed to ensure on-time delivery.”

Atlassian argues that Git Essentials provides additional features not found in Git version control. It lets developers to easily create a new Git branch from an issue tracked in JIRA with a single click. It also offers developers use any IDE they would like and offers integrations with other tools through its add-on marketplace. With JIRA integration, the development team can find relevant information related to an issue–from its creation through to development, testing, and deployment. The JIRA development panel provides a detailed presentation of the assigned tasks, provides the ability to manage tasks and permissions and gives an insight into the currently developed and tested code.

Atlassian offers a free 30-day trial version of Git Essentials solution that includes Atlassian JIRA, JIRA Agile, Bamboo and either stash or Bitbucket. The on-demand version starts at $40/month for 10 users and $600/month for 100 users. The downloadable version costs $12,800 for 100 users. Atlassian Git Essentials is currently being used for testing with a number of its large enterprise companies, including  Boeing, Cisco Systems, LG Electronics, Orbitz, Rakuten, Southwest Airlines, Starz Entertainment and Volkswagen.

Last year, Atlassian released Bamboo 5 to seamlessly integrate automation process of compiling the source code and test work programs – eliminating long-standing silos between product and operations groups with DevOps. The Stash 2.0 is a premier on-site Git repository management system used by enterprises to take advantage of the flexibility of Git while maintaining control of code quality and development.
