iOS 8 rumors: Finally, a better Maps app with transit data and augmented reality

medium_7564204504Apple has just released its iOS 7.1update, which delivers bug fixes, new settings and features, and a better experience for users of the iPhone 4. The major update is expected to be the last for the iPhone 4, as it’s likely that the device’s hardware won’t be able to support the next version of iOS.

Despite this, so far we’ve heard little of what to expect in the next iOS, dubbed iOS 8, but today the first rumors of what Apple’s next mobile platform might deliver have emerged. According to 9to5Mac, the next version of iOS will deliver enhanced Maps data as Apple continues to improve its navigation service to compete with what Google offers.

Apple Senior Vice Presidents Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi, and Maps head Patrice Gautier are leading teams of engineers to improve its Maps app.

When iOS 7 launched last year, the aesthetics of the app were improved to make it blend well with Jony Ive’s redesign of the platform. This year, all the tweaks will be done under-the-hood.

Sources familiar with the matter state that Apple’s acquisition of companies such as BroadMap, Embark, and HopStop, plus extensive engineering work, are paving the way to make Maps better for users.

Transit

One of the most important new features that’s said to coming with iOS 8 is the availability of public transit information, which is one especially important for mobile users who’re always on the go. This feature will allow users to plot their journeys from one point to another using public transport, as it will tap into train, subway, and bus data, and provide enhanced directions to major airports.

At first, the feature will only be available in major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, but eventually it expand to other locations across the United States and potentially other countries as well. Transit will be an option alongside Driving and Walking, can be viewed in Standard, Hybrid, and Satellite, and can be set as the default method of transportation for people who frequently use public transport.

Mapping data

Apple’s database for Mapping data will be greatly enhance to provide more accurate and reliable information, as well as new points of interests. In addition, new labels will be introduced to make structures such as airports, parks, train stations, bus stops, highways, and freeways easier to find.

Augmented reality

One last feature Apple is said to be looking into is the integration of augmented reality into the Maps app. The feature will leverage the built-in iPhone compass hardware to let users see nearby points of interests. Augmented reality entails using the iPhone’s camera to see information on buildings, what street you are in, and what popular shops are nearby.
