A threat to GoPro? Leaked images of HTC ReCamera

image of HTC ReCameraShortly after the release of a video teaser for HTC Corp.’s ReCamera, two images leaked showing the actual device.

Many, including HTC, was surprised when two images of the camera — which were found and posted by Reddit user fodawim — appeared online not long after the release of a teaser video. It is not clear if the leak was intentional or accidental.

Slated for release on October 8, the ReCamera is set to go head-to-head with GoPro Corp., the market dominator in personal video equipment. Aimed at use in extreme situations, with the ability to shoot 60-meters, underwater and in full 4K, any serious contenders have to ensure they can deliver these specifications and satisfy the extreme sports market.

Many have speculated that the ReCamera could go on sale for as little as $150. If HTC manages to deliver a device with better or at least comparable features to that of a GoPro, it could give GoPro a serious run for its money. However, very little is known of the technical specifications or the eventual price tag leading up to the October 8 event.

HTC has faced some financial issues and other challenges in the recent past, but going beyond the smartphone market may be just what is needed to boost their bottom line. Especially so if they manage to be successful in the personal video market where there are no serious contenders for market share other than GoPro.

Additional rumor indicate the ReCamera will also work via a smartphone app, further extending its uses. HTC is set to have a lot of attention focused on its October 8 announcement.
