OpenStack “got the network side of Cisco [Systems Inc.] much more engaged in Red Hat,” said Mike Evans, Red Hat’s VP of Technical Business Development. Because OpenStack supersizes storage, networking and compute, it’s been effective at “connecting Cisco technology with RedHat technology,” for public and private cloud, including crafting public and private cloud.

Cisco and Red Hat have a good partnership because of Cisco’s domination of network market share. Since there’s “no overlap” in that area, Evans said, the two companies work together well. It helps that Red Hat has is a trusted operating system supplier that offers both Inktank and Gluster, which can accept all storage. Evans explained that for Cisco’s inner cloud, “Red Hat is key” since OpenStack is “the most visible part of inner cloud.”

When it comes to Cisco’s relationship with open sourcing, Evans said that Cisco employees, “from the top down, they’re game to understand that the world is changing.” With competitors and partners alike beginning to offer open source versions of their products, Evans suggested that Cisco has had to “adapt to a new model to remain competitive.”
