Dave Fiveash – Risk Support Manager for BNP – In theCUBE During Splunk.conf 2014
DevOps requires organizations to have everyone “bought into the culture,” keeping them focused on the same goals, and being inclusive throughout the different departments, according to Dave Fiveash. The Global Market & Counterparty Risk Support Manager at Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) Paribas said that the DevOps challenge is more pressing in today’s IT departments as companies need the discipline of keeping deadlines and finding ways to “keep everyone together in the DevOps culture.” Fiveash reiterates the earliness of DevOps as a field, and its implementation is more of a cultural challenge than a technological one.
In his live interview at Splunk.conf 2014 with theCUBE co-hosts John Furrier and Jeff Kelly, Fiveash explained that banks “are relatively secure places, they put a lot of infrastructure outside to keep safe what’s on the inside.” They have to deal with the trade-offs of keeping data safe while granting access to those who need it. He detailed how Splunk had been a great help in that regard, especially in giving developers access to data without accessing the actual host, at the same time, getting them closer to customers.
“It’s amazing how creative [developers] can be sometimes,” said Fiveash. “When you put the data in front of them… they start to see the value of that. We’re really seeing new ideas. Once you open the window to this kind of data, people find new ways of using it.”
