Kim Dotcom to launch encrypted video chat early 2015

kim dotcomNew Zealand-based entrepreneur and occasional provocateur of the United States Government Kim Dotcom is getting into the video chat market with an announcement that he is launching a new encrypted service as part of his growing Mega Ltd. company.

“Mega will soon release a fully encrypted and browser based video call & chat service including high-speed file transfers. Bye bye Skype :-)” Dotcom wrote on Twitter.

The service is being pitched at users who are concerned about privacy, with Dotcom further saying that “No U.S.-based online service provider can be trusted with your data. Skype has no choice. They must provide the U.S. Government with backdoors.”

This isn’t the first time Dotcom has announced an interest in an encrypted calling service, with VentureBeat noting that it has been mentioned twice in 2013, however today’s announcement would seem to indicate that the promised service may be close to release.

The main page of Mega has also been updated to say that the service is coming in “early 2015,” but of note along with email as well, a service we covered the announcement of back in July 2013.

The service, if and when it arrives, should be warmly embraced by those who would rather not have Big Brother looking over their shoulders into everything they do online.
