The Facebook Club? Zuckerberg invites 30 million to his new book club

Last week Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg reached out to Facebook’s one billion members to help him choose his New Year’s resolution, and it looks like he has made a decision.

“My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week — with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post.

“Many of you proposed reading challenges. … I’ve found reading books very intellectually fulfilling. Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today. I’m looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books.”

A Year of Books

While Zuckerberg might be shifting is “media diet,” he has still found a way to include social media in his book-reading resolution.

“If you want to follow along on my challenge and read the same books I do, I’ve created a page, A Year of Books, where I’ll post what I’m reading. Please only participate in the discussions if you’ve actually read the books and have relevant points to add. The group will be moderated to keep it focused.”

Zuckerberg invited his 30 million Facebook followers to join him in his new book club, announcing that the first book on the agenda is The End of Power by Moisés Naím.

Zuckerberg wrote: “It’s a book that explores how the world is shifting to give individual people more power that was traditionally only held by large governments, militaries and other organizations. The trend towards giving people more power is one I believe in deeply, and I’m looking forward to reading this book and exploring this in more detail.”

The End of Power is already out of stock on Amazon, but it is available from other sources as well as in ebook format.

The book club will feature a new book every two weeks and will focus on ” learning about new cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.” The group encourages discussions about the books as well as suggestions for future picks.

With Facebook’s 1.35 billion monthly active users as of September 2014, Zuckerberg’s book club has the potential to rival Oprah’s as a driving force behind book sales.
