Zuckerberg turns to Facebook to crowdsource his New Year’s resolution

Facebook CEO Mark ZuckerbergFacebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is turning to the more than 1 billion Facebook users for help in picking his “personal challenge” for 2015.

“I’m crowdsourcing ideas for my next year’s personal challenge,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “For background, every year I take on a challenge to broaden my perspective and learn something about the world beyond my work at Facebook.”

He listed a few of his past personal challenges, which he said included (from Facebook):

  • Learning to speak Mandarin
  • Meeting one new person who doesn’t work at Facebook every day
  • Writing a thank you note each day to someone who made the world better
  • Being a vegetarian (or only eating meat if I killed the animal myself)
  • Wearing a tie every day

In the most recent “Q&A with Mark” community town hall meeting, one attendee asked Zuckerberg what his New Year’s resolution would be, and he admitted that he was not sure yet and would welcome any suggestions.

“I have an idea of what my next challenge might be,” Zuckerberg wrote in his post. “But I’m open to more ideas before the new year officially begins. So share your ideas here!”

Facebook answers back

Within 10 hours after Zuckerberg made his request for ideas, his post had over 93,000 likes and over 36,000 comments.

Strangly, while many of the top comments were legitimate suggestions for personal challenges, the replies saw a surge of the same Brazilian troll comments that had affected some of Zuckerberg’s other pages.

But aside from a few bizarre images from trolls and some inflammatory comments by others, Zuckerberg received thousands of personal challenge ideas. Here are a few of the top suggestions and Zuckerberg’s responses:

Read a new book every month. BUT, someone else gets to choose the book.

“I really like this idea.”

How about thinking to celebrate Muslims holidays

“We should definitely do more to celebrate Muslim holidays on Facebook. It’s more of an FB thing than a personal challenge though.”

Learn an instrument

“Great idea. I learned how to play guitar a while back but I could definitely improve :)”

Learn how to dance

“This would certainly be a challenge for me :)”
