Zuckerberg talks of a Dislike button, privacy, and more in second Facebook Q&A

Zuckerberg Q&A 2Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg talks about the possibility of a “Dislike” button, as well as answering other questions about privacy and more in his second ever “Q&A With Mark” community town hall meeting.

Will Facebook ever add a Dislike button?

“I don’t think there needs to be a voting system on Facebook about whether posts are good or bad,” said Zuckerberg. He explained that a “dislike” button would not be a positive feature for the community, but he said that Facebook was considering other options.

“A lot of times people share things on Facebook that are sad moments in their lives, or are tough cultural or social things,” said Zuckerberg. Facebook has had frequent internal discussions on the idea, asking themselves, “What’s the right way to make it so people can easily express a broader range of emotions? To empathize or to express surprise or laughter?”

Zuckerberg noted that people can always comment on a post, but sometimes they feel they “have to have something witty to say” and it is easier to press the “Like” button. Facebook has no to plans to announce such a feature soon, but it is “an important area of discussion.”

Why are there so many updates to the privacy policy?

“What we try to do is update the privacy policy about once a year to reflect the technological, product changes and business changes that happened in that year,” Zuckerberg said.

He explained that one of the biggest recent changes in Facebook is the increase in the types of services it offers, pointing to the company’s acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp. With these new features, as well as the growing use of video and location information on mobile devices, Facebook needed to expand their policies to cover these areas.

“Sometimes we do a good job with it and we do it clearly. Sometimes we don’t and we get criticized for it, and often rightfully so.”

Some other questions included Facebook’s role in civic discussions surrounding events such as the recent Ferguson riots, as well as tips for starting a company, Facebook’s policies on social experiments, and even Zuckerberg’s favorite pizza topping (fried chicken).
