The smartest cars we’ve ever seen: Connected car highlights of #CES2015
If you are attending this year’s Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas, NV, don’t expect to see car manufacturers revealing new models, as those are saved for car shows. What you can expect to see at the tradeshow is a prototype or even a demonstration of technologies that connects the car to the Internet.
Who will be showcasing future connected cars at this year’s show?
.
Visteon’s connected car technologies
Visteon Corp. will feature its range of innovative connected vehicle technologies and services at CES. It plans to showcase its Connected Vehicle Gallery, SmartCore integrated solution, Semper Novus cockpit and driverless roads.
The company says its Connected Vehicle Gallery adds value for consumers, dealers and automakers by lowering warranty and service costs, maintaining data security and adding over-the-air software upgrades. Other demonstrations will include Visteon’s SmartCore solution, which integrates traditional driver information, infotainment, and connectivity in one seamless human machine interaction; the Semper Novus cockpit, which allows for easy upgrading of hardware and download software so the system is “always new”; and simulators that feature an immersive driverless vehicle experience.
“Technology will define how mobility, the Internet of Things and the auto industry work together to build the cars and transportation systems of the future,” said Martin T. Thall, Visteon’s executive vice president and president, Electronics. “At the 2015 CES, Visteon will showcase how we fuse technology, innovation and ecosystem partnerships to unlock the value of connectivity and transform driving into a connected experience.”
Hyundai’s Android Wear app
By late 2015, you may be able to start, lock or even find your car with the use of your smartwatch, thanks to Hyundai Motor Co.’s Blue Link Android Wear app. The company will debut the Hyundai Blue Link app at CES 2015. The cloud-based app features remote start, the ability to find a vehicle in a crowded parking lot, quick access to service information, and locking and unlocking doors using a smartwatch or smartphone.
The Blue Link app was created in collaboration with Station Digital Media, Inc., and the app will be demonstrated on various smartwatches, such as those offered by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Motorola, Inc., Sony Corp. and LG Electronics, Inc., at the event.
“This new app expands Hyundai’s exploration into how wearable technology and Blue Link fit into a customer’s lifestyle,” said Barry Ratzlaff, executive director, Customer Connect and Service Business Development, Hyundai Motor America. “Connecting to your car through a smartwatch and voice recognition was previously something seen only in science fiction movies. Now, we can provide this capability to owners of Hyundai vehicles equipped with Blue Link.”
BMW unveils new tech for safer cars, advanced valet system
At CES 2015, BMW AG will be showing off its valet technology, which allows drivers to command their cars to park in a multi-layer parking building using a smartwatch that uses laser sensors and algorithms, as well as call the car when needed. Aside from this enhanced self-parking navigation technology, BMW will also be featuring its platform for 360-degree collision avoidance. The 360-degree collision avoidance system, which will be featured in the research vehicle BMW i3, includes four advanced laser scanners that record the environment and reliably identify impediments, such as columns in a multi-story car park.
If the vehicle approaches a wall or a column too quickly, the system brakes automatically to prevent the threat of collision. The vehicle is brought to a standstill unless the driver steers away from the obstacle or changes direction, which results in the system releasing the brakes. This will contribute to the enhanced safety and comfort offered by BMW vehicles; and for those afraid that the car will take over your life, BMW says that the assistance system can be overridden at any time by the driver.
2015 Ford Mustang gets smart
Ford Motor Co. will put on display the 2015 Ford Mustang at CES 2015. The iconic coupe and convertible will feature technologies not previously offered on the vehicle, such as the adaptive cruise control, which detects the distance of the vehicle in front and adjusts the speed accordingly; forward-collision warning, which senses a potential crash and warns the driver and readies the braking system for a quick stop; backup camera; blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert; and the SYNC infotainment system and MyFord Touch with navigation.
The 2015 Ford Mustang also features a drive mode with four options: normal, snow/wet, sport and track. It adjusts characteristics such as steering weight, throttle response and stability control settings.
