System z takes analytics, security, and transactional data in-processor | #IBMz

Kathryn Guarini

While in-memory table solutions currently represent the state-of-the-art standard of the industry, IBM’s new System z moves analytics on transactional data, with security and encryption running at the processor level. In her live interview from IBM zNext with theCUBE, Kathryn Guarini, Vice President for zSystems at IBM said “this machine really is unmatched,” due to its tremendous scale, performance, security that’s unmatched.

Guarini spoke further on the matter, stating that “The features cannot be compared to other perform. We really designed this system to support transaction growth from mobility, to integrate analytics.”

“There’s performance in so many dimensions. At the heart of the technology, we have tremendous value from the processor up,“ Guarini said. The 13th generation of System z has four layers of cache, more cache that can be accessed from the processor cache, faster I/O subsystems, as well as hundreds of additional processing cores. “It’s the scale of this system that can allow you things that you can do in a single footprint, coupled with unique security features. We literally have made innovation at each level. Across over every dimension, we have improved performance, scalability, capability.” Guarini stated.

“Today, many users are moving data off of platforms including the mainframe to do their analytics, Guarini said. That is “incredibly cumbersome [and] expensive. You can do analytics now on the z platform,” Guarini continued.

Analytics are integrated where the transactions and the data live. The system comes with new features for data transformations, embedded analytics features in the processor, which support analytics that are “17 times faster than comparable solutions,” faster scoring of transactions, faster fraud detection, and many other applications, she explained.

Asked what advice she has for CIOs, Guarini said that “CIOs need to be thinking about what is a good solution for the variety of problems they have in their shops and not segment them. They need to think about this more holistically, what challenges you need to address as a business.” That perspective allows them to get away from good enough solutions and open up “for new possibilities that can drive tremendous value to their businesses.”
