Amazon produced content is coming to the big screen with an announcement today that its Amazon Studios division will now be producing original movies for theaters, as well as Amazon Prime.
The distribution of the movies will differ slightly to releases from traditional studios in that they will premiere on Prime Instant Video in the United States 4 to 8 weeks after their theatrical debut versus the current 39 to 52 weeks for traditional studio movies.
Amazon is aiming to deliver films that “amaze, excite, and move fans” and will deliver 12 movies a year with production starting later this year.
Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios said in a statement that “not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
“Audiences already recognize that Amazon has raised the bar with productions in the episodic realm, tackling bold material in unique ways and collaborating with top talent, both established and emerging. To help carry the torch into the feature film world for such an innovative company is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility.”
Amazon has previously dabbled in developing original television series including Transparent, Tumble Leaf, and Mozart in the Jungle. The move follows in the footsteps of Netflix Inc., who announced a move into movie making in 2014.
