The City of San Francisco’s Controller’s Office says their main tech challenge is hiring the IT staff they need to compete with companies such as Google or Uber Technologies, Inc. Dennis McCormick, Deputy Director, Controller’s Office, City of San Francisco explained in his live interview with theCUBE at the Oracle Next Generation Engineered Systems Launch event that a solution was to give people the newest challenges, “give them the most cutting edge technologies” and the “latest and greatest in hardware and software.”
Security challenges determine the Controller’s Office technology decisions. “Everybody’s talking cloud,” McCormick said. He also explained that while the financial data is transparent and readily available to the public, the human resources (HR) data is handled with “very low tolerance to risk” and won’t be part of a potential move to the cloud. “With core HR data is too much risk right now to really sign off on that right now.” McCormick stated.
The biggest benefits derived from using Oracle’s Engineered Systems was the increased focus on having one central system for scalability. “We did not want to be struggling with different vendor support models,” McCormick explained, saying it also helped solved their hiring problem – all engineers were trained on one platform. “We also wanted to make sure that when we moved the data centers, we had robust disaster recovery,” McCormick said.
