Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical Preview coming to many more phones
Microsoft has announced that its Windows 10 Technical Preview will be coming to a much greater number of phones, far-outnumbering the few devices the build was available for when first released on February 12th.
Commenting on why the list was so paltry at first Microsoft said in a blog, “the reason for this is that we had to select from the set of phones that had sufficient system partition sizes configured by the manufacturer. This was necessary for us to be able to in-place upgrade the phones.” The “partition stitching”, says Microsoft, code that is required to support a greater number of devices, is now finished.
The new release should be available on select devices early April, and as you can see there are still a few holes, including the absence of HTC, Samsung and LG Windows Phones, and the Lumia 930. According to recent reports the 930 isn’t on the list because of a bug Microsoft is currently trying to fix and is currently “chasing down”.
One thing to bear in mind if you’re thinking about installing the preview is that it’s really for testing purposes, and so if you don’t have a spare device hanging about it’s probably best to leave the build alone. There are tons of bugs and missing features, but not only that you should expect crashes, apps not working or installing correctly, trouble connecting to networks, and even loss of files due to malfunctioning. As Microsoft points out only experts should play around with the preview. “If you think APN is a cable news network,” says the company, “Technical Preview may not be right for you.”
