Data-driven baby making: Conceivable applies analytics to fertility tracking

baby-84626_1920“Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it,” according to a popular song written in 1928 by Cole Porter. One well-known result of “doing it” is getting pregnant. Today, a new high-tech fertility tracker helps women get pregnant using their iPhone.

Austin, Texas-based startup Conceivable, Inc. today announced the availability of their Conceivable app, along with $800,000 in seed funding raised from a diverse group of investors (including former and current patients, successful healthcare executives and former venture capitalists).

Using personalized data tracking and analytics, the new Conceivable app for iPhone helps a woman make achievable improvements to her health and menstrual cycle over time, thus increasing her chances of a successful pregnancy. The Conceivable app was created to help the approximately 6.7 million couples in the U.S. who are affected by infertility (or one in every eight couples). Infertility is defined as the inability to get and stay pregnant after a year of trying. If you are over 35, the term is applied after six months of trying.

Conceivable says it’s the combination of the data tracking with the actionable program that makes their app so effective. And at $199 per month, the company says it is also a more affordable alternative to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, whose average cost for just one cycle can be upwards of $12,000 or more.

“After working with thousands of couples diagnosed as infertile, we’ve developed a convenient and powerful program that will dramatically improve a woman’s chances of naturally conceiving and carrying a baby to full term—at a small fraction of traditional fertility treatment costs,” said Kirsten Hurder-Karchmer, founder and CEO of Conceivable, in a statement.

“There’s a common misconception that fertility is black and white—you are either fertile or infertile. We approach fertility in a fundamentally different way, viewing it as a full spectrum. Conceivable was designed to help women who are on the ‘infertile’ end of the spectrum move towards greater natural fertility.”

According to the company, Conceivable starts by “maximizing a woman’s fertility naturally,” focusing on nutrition, with a customized mix of herbal supplements designed to help women optimize their menstrual cycles for conception. The Conceivable iOS app then creates an individualized plan to further lessen the barriers, coaching each user towards lifestyle changes that “scientifically carry equal weight in being and staying fertile.”

The app creates this plan by tracking and analyzing data such as basal body temperature, length of menstrual cycle, and time of ovulation. The adaptive learning software identifies any underlying issues that may be affecting fertility, and automatically adjusts each user’s recommended plan based on her progress. An easy-to-understand visual dashboard shares a monthly fertility report with the user to help her monitor her overall progress.
