DataStax brings enterprise grade Cassandra database to HP Moonshot

4188146573_c7ca7ace5cDataStax, the company that commercializes the open-source Apache Cassandra NoSQL database, has teamed up with Hewlett-Packard Co. to deliver an enterprise-grade version of its software on HP Moonshot, the low-power, hyperscale servers that “changed the industry”, according to ex-HP executive Dave Donatelli.

Called DataStax Enterprise (DSE) on HP Moonshot, the two companies are billing the product as “a joint database management solution that delivers breakthrough efficiency and scale”. It takes advantage of HP Moonshot’s smaller footprint, lower latency and high scalability capabilities, and the companies are making some big claims about its ability to “handle large amounts of data with exceptional performance and continuous availability.”

Billy Bosworth, CEO of DataStax, said DSE on Moonshot shows how the “bigger is better” approach to hardware technology is outdated in today’s connected world, and illustrates how technologies like Cassandra are becoming critical to meet the demands of Internet of Things, Web and mobile applications.

“In order for organizations to realize the full power of DataStax Enterprise, they must have the right hardware solution in place and that’s why we are excited to work with HP as the HP Moonshot servers support the massive distributed scalability required by modern data-driven, online applications,” Bosworth said.

First up, DSE on HP Moonshot offers some big benefits in terms of footprint reduction. It provides enterprises with the scalability they need to set up complex, large-scale deployments, while in doing so reduces the total cost of ownership by up to 66 percent on average. This means systems use up to 90 percent less power, 75 percent less space and 98 percent less cabling than older legacy hardware, without sacrificing performance, according to DataStax. The smaller footprint also simplifies application environments, increases capacity and utilization, and ensures continuous availability for critical apps that demand fast performance and zero downtime.

DSE on HP Moonshot comes with speed advantages too, with up to 1.7x more ops/second than traditional rack mount infrastructure to ensure exceptionally fast response times, the companies said. Finally, DSE on HP Moonshot is also said to reduce the burden of management with visual monitoring tools that can be accessed by any browser or device.

“DSE on HP Moonshot enables our joint customers to handle large amounts of data with exceptional performance and continuous availability,” said Susan Blocher, vice president, Marketing and Business Development at HP Moonshot.
