Google Play gets a family-friendly section with content ratings and age filters

Recently, Google Inc has been working toward making its services more family-friendly, such as the YouTube Kids app it released earlier this year. Back in March, Google also implemented content rating systems for apps and games similar to those used for non-mobile games, and now the company has revamped the Play Store to include family-friendly sections that make it easier for parents to gauge what apps and games are safe for their children.

“Whether you’re trying to entertain a toddler on a crowded plane, encourage your child’s newfound love of reading or simply find a movie for the whole family to enjoy, finding the right content should be just a tap or two away,” Eunice Kim of Google’s Android team wrote on the official Android blog. “Parents want the best for their kids, but when it comes to digital entertainment, it can be difficult to know what to look for.”

Kim added, “Starting today, we’re making it easier to find great family-friendly content on Google Play. Parents can now find family destinations across the Play store, with new features for browsing by age and interests. We’re also providing more useful information about apps and content on Google Play and improved tools so you can decide what’s right for your family.”

The Apps, Games and Movies & TV homepages now include a new Family button that will take users to the store’s “new family-friendly experiences,” and the Books homepage now includes a Children’s Books section. The new updates to Play Store also include filters for specific characters like Elmo, SpongeBob, and Dora that make it easier to find games from those brands.

The new Family sections include age and interest filters that allow users to find content appropriate for specific age groups, and certain sections, such as Games, also include more detailed ratings information thanks to Google’s partnerships with groups like the ESRB, which is the rating body for video games in the U.S. and Canada, and the IARC, which handles ratings in several countries throughout the European Union.

The new features haven’t hit the live version of the store yet, but they will be rolling out in the next few weeks.
