Fitbit, Inc., a company that manufactures and distributes a number of fitness tracking devices, debuted on the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday under the ticker FIT. Before the company went public, it was projected to trade at $20 per share, hoping to raise $732 million with a $4.1 billion valuation. On Thursday, Fitbit shares were trading at $29.68 with a market cap of $6.08 billion at close of trade. Fitbit’s initial public offering is seen as a positive response to how technology is influencing health and fitness monitoring.

San Jose, CA has tapped startup company anyCOMM to help the city connect integral parts of the city to the Internet. This aims to help San Jose make better decisions based on the data collected by numerous sensors which will placed on streetlights in the city center as well as in the perimeter of the airport. And San Jose is doing this without spending a dime.

A study commissioned by Progress Software Corp. reveals that IoT apps are indeed generating revenue, with those touting smart home solutions topping the list. The respondents of the study’s survey are seeing the smart home as one of the key industries in the IoT app development but in the next few years, it is expected that healthcare, smart city and automotive will lead the IoT market and generate the most revenue.
