A world beyond Hadoop | #HadoopSummit
After interviewing a top-notch lineup of Apache Hadoop, Hortonworks, Inc. and other tech industry leaders, theCUBE cohosts John Furrier and George Gilbert analyzed key issues from Hadoop Summit’s first day.
“In his keynote, [Tresata Inc. CEO] Abhi Mehta said that where we want to go is to turn analytics into a set of building blocks for automated intelligence,” recalled Gilbert. “That’s Hadoop’s foundation.”
Furrier then noted that Cloudera Inc.’s relationship with EMC Corp. is telling. “EMC is in a good position to be a platform for Big Data,” going on to say that. “Hortonworks and Cloudera are not mutually exclusive anymore. In my opinion, we’re going to see an environment that is post-Hadoop. Hadoop is going to be there, but there is an indicator that there is a world beyond Hadoop. We won’t have to have everything running on Hadoop. We can have other platforms.”
Integration risks
Furrier said that this sort of integration poses risks on two fronts: failure and success. “If I’m successful on my Hadoop deployment, what happens? Do I put my data in Hadoop?” he asked. “There’s an integration of storage, flash … customer deployments will not be with one vendor.”
Furrier believes that customers will have “pockets” of platform components from different vendors. He expects to hear more about the costs and challenges involved in that environment.
Looking ahead, Gilbert predicts that services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft’s Azure will be the “real” competition for Hadoop distros.
