Implementing a digital supply chain environment | #HPDiscover
Digital transformation’s reach has extended from business apps all the way to media companies. At HP Discover 2015, Patrick Osborne, senior director of product management & marketing – Storage at Hewlett-Packard Co., and Bill Walker, executive director of Enterprise IT at 20th Century Fox, joined theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s Media production team, to talk about the infrastructure changes involved in digital media.
theCUBE cohost Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon, pointed out that the show has changed its focus over the years from pure technology to business solutions.
Osborn agreed. “At the end of the day, I think the messaging to the customers is, we’re here to help you solve your problems,” he said. “And part of that’s technology; part of it’s services. This new, high-level messaging around transformation and helping people achieve these business outcomes, I think is a good fresh start.”
The physical to digital transformation
According to Walker, “It’s really been about the physical to digital transformation. On the infrastructure side and the IT side, we’re trying to support that as best we can. And the name of the game lately has been ‘speed to market.’ So we’ve partnered very tightly with HP, not only on the hardware but the software side in building out kind of a brand new digital supply chain environment.”
What does that digital supply chain look like? “You’ve got not only things like content delivery in there, but you’ve got watermarking and all the hallmarks of what you would need in a digital environment to deliver that customer [a] quality product from end-to-end” — and also protect IP. “Security’s a big one,” Walker added.
Over the past two years, Fox has transitioned from a tape-based system to disk in order to improve flexibility. HP’s StoreOnce, a single federated deduplication technology, has already proven itself as a way to reduce RTO.
“We kind of had an ‘oops’ incident where somebody deleted a VM, and with StoreOnce, we already had it there and we were able to recover it in minutes and have it working again — which was not something we were able to do in previous iterations.”
