Before the name Warcraft became synonymous with the biggest MMORPG of all time, it also represented some of the most iconic and popular real-time strategy (RTS) games released in the history of the genre, but it has been over 12 years since the release of the last Warcraft RTS, Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. Since then, fans of Blizzard’s strategies games have at to make do with StarCraft II and its expansions, but there is a chance that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for fans who have been waiting for a new Warcraft RTS.
According to StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void producer Tom Morton, the studio may be thinking about revisiting Warcraft’s RTS roots once development on StarCraft II wraps up.
“It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next,” Morton said in an interview with IGN during last week’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. “There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible.”
A new Warcraft RTS might not be a bad idea for the studio, especially considering the abysmal subscription rates for World of Warcraft right now, which are at their lowest in nearly a decade. It is common for WoW expansions to see spikes in users immediately before and after the release of an expansion with a sharp drop-off a month or two in, but the most recent expansion saw the sharpest drop in the game’s history.
Of course, “anything is possible” is public relations speak for “maybe…maybe not,” and with the enormous following behind StarCraft II, it is hard to imagine that Blizzard would so easily shelve that property without something else in mind for it.
“This isn’t the end of StarCraft, but it’s the end of this story for these characters,” Morton told IGN. “We don’t have any specific plans, but I’ll say that the universe has so much potential for more stories, clearly other stories could be told.”
Maybe we will soon see a World of StarCraft? “Anything is possible.”
