Belgian indie game developer Larian Studios has announced a sequel to its popular retro RPG game Divinity: Original Sin, and the studio will once again be turning to Kickstarter for funding.
“For a long time, we’ve dreamed of making something even bigger, better, and more engaging than Divinity: Original Sin, and now it might finally be within our reach,” Larian Studios wrote in an announcement on their Kickstarter page. “However, we can’t reach that dream without your help.”
Larian’s first Divinity: Original Sin game raised nearly $1 million from nearly 20,000 backers on Kickstarter in Spring 2013, more than double the studio’s original goal of $400,000. Since then, the game has enjoyed incredible success, selling over 150,000 copies in its first week alone and becoming Larian’s fastest selling game ever.
“Divinity: Original Sin wouldn’t be the game it was without the input from our Kickstarter backers & Steam Early Access players,” Larian’s Swen Vincke wrote in a blog post. “There were a lot of them and they pushed us forwards in directions we hadn’t anticipated when we started development. To this day, our entire team is incredibly grateful for this. Our community was a critical factor for the success of the game. Without having that same community on board, I think it’s going to be very hard for us to achieve the goals we have with Divinity: Original Sin 2, and so we’ll do our very best to convince them to back us once again. The result at the end will be so much better if they do.”
He added, “I’m hopeful that our players will find Divinity: Original Sin 2 a worthy cause to back though; it really goes beyond what’s been done so far in turn-based RPGs and it’s going to be a lot of fun to play. Actually, it already is and we’ll be showing a prototype at Pax Prime where people will be able to get a taste of it.”
The new Kickstarter campaign for the sequel is set to launch on August 27, but you can vote on possible backer rewards and stretch goals, as well as find out details about the game at divinityoriginalsin2.com.
