Report: iPad lost Q2 enterprise market share to Android, Windows tablets
A new report shows that, despite continuing to dominate the enterprise smartphone market in the second quarter (Q2) of 2015, iOS has lost market share to competitors Android and Windows in the tablet market.
According to data from Good Technology’s quarterly Q2 Mobility Index Report (PDF download), iOS’s overall share of the enterprise mobile market fell from 70 percent in the first quarter (Q1) to 64 percent in Q2.
In second place, Android claimed a 32 percent market share in Q2, up 6 percent from 26 percent in the previous quarter, while Windows took third spot with a 3 percent overall share. Windows Phone remained stagnant at a 1 percent share.
Good Technology does not offer any insight into BlackBerry handset activations as BlackBerry Enterprise Server precludes access to this data.
iPad lost market share to Android, Windows tablets
In the enterprise tablet market, iOS saw its share eroded to 64 percent, from 81 percent in the previous quarter. This represents a significant drop from the iPad’s 80 percent to 90 percent dominance in the enterprise to date, while Android’s share jumped 6 percent from 15 percent to 25 percent in Q2. Windows tablet surged to 11 percent share in Q2, up from 4 percent in Q1 and just 1 percent market share two quarters ago.
iOS again dominated regulated industries but lost high-tech to Android
As per previous quarters, iOS again dominated mobile activations in regulated industries, such as the public sector (79 percent), education (76 percent), healthcare (70 percent), insurance (65 percent) and financial services (63 percent).
iOS lost market share to Android in the high-tech sector where Google’s mobile operating system overtook iOS with 53 percent of device activations, up from 47 percent in the previous quarter. Android also saw strong growth in the energy (48 percent) and manufacturing (42 percent) sectors.
iPad sales at a four-year low
In its most recent earnings report, Apple reported the lowest number of iPads sold in four years, with just 10.9 million units sold during its fiscal third quarter.
Despite a continuing decline in iPad sales, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he remains “bullish on iPad” and the company continues to invest in product development with the addition of multitasking features for iPad in the upcoming iOS 9 release and the rumored release of a 12.9-inch ‘iPad Pro’ aimed at business users.
