Solving IT storage with analytics and FlashSoft | #VMworld

The IT operations and infrastructure management environment has evolved over the past 10 years, and it’s becoming increasingly complicated to understand what’s going in these systems. SIOS Technology Corp. is solving these complications by taking first-generation analytics tools to the next level, and SanDisk Corp.’s FlashSoft technology is offering innovative storage solutions.

Jerry Melnick, COO of SIOS, and Tom Matson, director of Software Solution Sales at SanDisk, sat down to talk to Dave Vellante on theCUBE’s (from the SilconANGLE Media team) live coverage of VMworld 2015.

Applying Big Data analytics

SIOS is applying Big Data analytics technology that has been used in fields like biological sciences and financial services. “We’re trying … to really understand the IT operations data and answer some of the tough questions that people haven’t been able to answer before,” said Melnick.

SanDisk’s new host-based caching software (FlashSoft) is a perfect example of a use case for advanced analytics. “We are a flash company no matter what we do, and it’s now moving into the data center in a big way,” said Matson. “We’ve got software now that makes it easier for customers to adopt flash in that data center.”

Complementing companies

The expectation is that the two companies will complement each other very well moving forward. Melnick said SIOS can ask the question: “How do we help customers who have storage issues identify the workloads that are really suffering?” These issues can then possibly be managed by applying SanDisk’s FlashSoft technology.

FlashSoft uses the concept of Flash as a host-based caching layer. “The software takes any flash device in the server and uses that to store the hot data that we’ve identified with our algorithms to accelerate those applications,” said Matson. “We’re automatically moving in that data from the backend storage into that local flash.”

Find it and fix it

It’s a “find it and fix it” mentality, according to Matson. As a system operates, the environment changes. That’s what SIOS can find — the changes. SIOS can step in and show customers in a behind-the-scenes way how FlashSoft will benefit their specific applications. “Our software can [then] change configurations,” said Matson.
